CHRISTMAS LEGEND Legend has it that the popular Christmas song "The Twelve Days Of Christmas" was actually written as a teaching tool for children to remember baic Christian doctrine. According to folklore, the Roman Catholics were not allowed to practise their faith in public during the sixteenth century. In order not to arouse any suspicion, this song was written as secret code to remind the children about their faith. Each gift in the song has a hidden meaning regarding the Christian doctrine. Below is an explanation of what each gift signifies: A Partridge In A Pear Tree: A partridge is a picture of Christ while the pear tree represents the cross. Partridges are known to give up their lives to protect their young, thus representing Jesus who died on the cross for us. Two Turtledoves: A picture of the Old and New Testaments. Three French Hens: In the sixteenth century, only the rich could afford French hens. These costly poultry were used to represent the three precious gifts of faith, hope and love in 1 Corinthians 13:13. Four Calling Birds: The four gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Five Gold Rings: They represent the first five books of the Old Testament, collectively called the Torah, which are highly esteemed and considered of more worth than gold. Six Geese A-Laying: Since eggs symbolise new life, this is a picture of the six days of God's creation. Seven Swans A-Swimming: The sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit according to Romans 12:6-8. Eight Maids A-Milking: The eight beatitudes of Jesus in Matthew 5:3-10. Nine Ladies Dancing: The nine fruits of the Holy Spirit as listed in Galatians 5:22-23 - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Ten Lords A-Leaping: A picture of the Ten Commandments. Eleven Pipers Piping: The 11 disciples of Jesus who were faithful to Him. Twelve Drummers Drumming: The 12 beliefs stated in the Apostles' Creed.

CHRISTIAN RELATED JOKES How To Get To Heaven Testing the children in her class to see if they understood the concept of how to get to heaven, a teacher asked, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into heaven?" "No!" the children answered. "If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the yard and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into heaven?" Again, the answer was, "No!" By now the teacher was starting to smile. "If I was kind to animals and gave candy to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into heaven?" Again, all the children answered, "No!" "Well then, how can I get into heaven?" asked the teacher. A five-year-old boy shouted out, "You've gotta be dead!"  Finding Your Way At a small town to preach a sermon, a minster wanted to mail a letter to his family back home. He stopped a young boy in the street and asked him where the post office was. After the boy had given him directions, the minister thanked him and said, "If you come to church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven." "I don't think I will be there," the boy said. "You don't even know the way to the post office." Someone's Following Us Tommy's mother would walk him to kindergarten everyday, much to his annoyance. He came home one day and protested that he wanted to be like the "big boys" who did not have mummies walking them to school. So, the mother asked a neighbour, Mrs Goodnest, to follow her son to school, but at a distance behind him so that he would not notice her. Mrs Goodnest agreed, saying that it would be a good way to get some exercise. The next school day, Mrs Goodnest and her little girl, Marcy, followed Tommy as he walked to school with another boy he knew. After a week, this friend noticed that this same lady had been following them everyday. Finally, he said to Tommy, "Have you noticed that lady following us all week? Do you know her?" Tommy replied nonchantly. "Yeah, I know who she is." The friend said, "Well, who is she?" "That's just Shirley Goodnest," Tommy said. "Shirley Goodnest? Who is she and why is she following us?" "well," Tommy explained, "every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers because she worries about me so much. And in it, the psalm says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life', so, I guess I'll just have to get used to it."
